Maryland Hospital Hires Lab Management Firm

March 19, 2004

Maryland General Hospital, which has acknowledged sending 460 suspect HIV and hepatitis C test results to patients over a 14-month period ending in August, has hired a company to manage and review its laboratories. In a statement issued late Thursday, the hospital said it had hired PCS Laboratory Systems of Midway, Utah, to provide lab management support and perform a comprehensive review of the hospital's lab. An effort to locate and retest all patients who received the suspect results is underway. Hospital officials say they are cooperating with a review by the state Office of Health Care Quality, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Maryland) said Thursday that a Congressional hearing in May will investigate the testing equipment and its use.
