Florida: Grant to Help Expand Overtown Health Center

A three-year, $3 million grant from the United Health Foundation (UHF) will be used to expand staff and services at the Jefferson Reaves Sr. Health Center in Miami's Overtown -- the poorest neighborhood in the poorest large U.S. city. The donation, announced Tuesday, is designed to help doctors diagnose and treat chronic diseases -- including HIV, STDs, diabetes, hypertension, asthma, arthritis and depression -- before complications take hold. Census figures show Overtown's death rate from HIV/AIDS was 125.8 per 100,000, compared to the U.S. average of 20.4. The nonprofit UHF, which is affiliated with the UnitedHealthcare insurance company, has made similar grants to clinics in Washington and the Bronx.
