U.S. News Illinois: AIDS Activist Wins Leadership AwardMay 21, 2004 New Phoenix Assistance Center's founder, Gwendolyn Mastin, is one of 10 people receiving this year's Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leadership Program Award. The award is given each year to people who have overcome significant challenges to expand access to health care and social services to the underserved. Launched in 1991, the center was Chicago's first scattered-site programs to provide housing and support services for homeless women infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS, and their children. The center has served over 5,700 since being founded. Mastin will receive $105,000 to support her center and $15,000 as a personal stipend.
