November 17, 2004
In Zambia so far this year, 1,250 teachers have died of HIV/AIDS-related complications, according to Roy Mwaba, general secretary of the Zambia National Union of Teachers. The local Post newspaper quoted Mwaba as saying that according to the reports reaching his office, the majority of the teachers never underwent voluntary counseling and testing and so could not access antiretrovirals. Most of the teachers have been reluctant to learn their HIV status and fearful of visiting testing centers, said Mwaba.
