International News Dominican Republic: United States to Supply Aid for HIV/AIDS MedicineOctober 5, 2004 The United States will give the Dominican Republic $28 million over the next three years to help the Caribbean country purchase HIV/AIDS medicines, President Leonel Fernandez said Monday. Around 228,000 of the Dominican Republic's 8.8 million population, or about 2.6 percent, are HIV-infected. Many of those infected do not get treatment due to the social stigma associated with HIV/AIDS and the high cost of medicines. Fernandez said the U.S. aid will help give HIV patients more access to treatment. Miami Herald 10.05.04 This article was provided by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
