Dominican Republic: United States to Supply Aid for HIV/AIDS Medicine

October 5, 2004

The United States will give the Dominican Republic $28 million over the next three years to help the Caribbean country purchase HIV/AIDS medicines, President Leonel Fernandez said Monday. Around 228,000 of the Dominican Republic's 8.8 million population, or about 2.6 percent, are HIV-infected. Many of those infected do not get treatment due to the social stigma associated with HIV/AIDS and the high cost of medicines. Fernandez said the U.S. aid will help give HIV patients more access to treatment.
