Prevention/Epidemiology Pediatricians Cite Barriers in Talking About Sexual RisksSeptember 3, 2004 In a study presented at the 15th International AIDS Conference in Bangkok, of more than 500 pediatricians surveyed by CDC, 87 percent believed their role was to provide sexual risk reduction information and 85 percent did so if parents requested it. However, about 62 percent of the pediatricians said parents did not often ask for such information and 74 percent cited a lack of time as a barrier in providing it. Eighty-three percent surveyed said to improve that rate, they wanted a high-quality brochure to give patients. In response, CDC will work with the American Academy of Pediatrics to develop such literature.
