UN, Russia Pool Efforts in Struggle Against HIV/AIDS

April 20, 2005

On Monday in Moscow, UNAIDS representatives and 150 delegates from Russian organizations convened to discuss cooperating in the fight against HIV/AIDS. "As of early 2005, around 300,000 HIV-infected were registered in Russia. According to experts, by 2010 over 500,000 Russians can become victims of HIV/AIDS," said a representative of the UN Development Program. The forum -- which includes representatives from governmental, social and religious institutions -- hopes to "define the role of different social structures in the fight with epidemics and consolidate the resources of Russian organizations and their international partners."
