Australia: Former "Neighbours" Star Swimming for AIDS Research

April 22, 2005

Australian actor Stephen Hunt, best known for his role on the television show "Neighbours," said Wednesday he will swim solo from Spain's Strait of Gibraltar to the coast of Morocco to raise money for AIDS research. Hunt said he hopes to raise $40,000 (US$31,000) for the AIDS Trust's Kids with AIDS program, for which he is an ambassador. The journey from Europe to Africa, which Hunt said he chose for symbolic reasons, will begin August 1. In 2002, Hunt swam across the English Channel, raising more than $50,000 (US$39,000) for AIDS research. At that time, he dedicated the adventure to an uncle who had died from AIDS. Hunt estimates the 25-kilometer swim will take eight to 10 hours.
