April 4, 2005

On Friday, a report issued at the end of an international AIDS conference in Moscow found that more than 80 percent of people with HIV in the Commonwealth of Independent States are under the age of 30. For example, in Ukraine, 25 percent of people with HIV are teenagers; in Belarus, 60 percent of all people with HIV are ages 15-24, according to the report. An estimated 70 percent of all new HIV cases in the CIS are related to growing drug consumption. Some 1.4 million people in the CIS -- which comprises all the former Soviet Union states except the Baltics -- are registered as HIV-infected, according to official statistics.
