Thailand: About 1,000 Activists Protest U.S.-Thailand Free Trade Talks

April 6, 2005

On Tuesday, about 1,000 protesters rallied outside the venue for U.S.-Thailand free-trade talks, expressing concern that U.S. demands regarding intellectual property rights could block Thais from accessing cheap, generic AIDS drugs. "They've been there since last night, and it gradually swelled as more groups joined them," said Somnuk Chanket, police commander of Pattaya, a resort town in southeastern Thailand. Further details were not immediately available. U.S. and Thai negotiators are in the second round of discussions over a proposed trade agreement to lower and eventually eliminate tariffs. Trade between the countries totals some $21 billion annually, with the United States importing about $15 billion worth of goods, including rice, fish, shrimp and chicken.
