China: AIDS-Afflicted Province Takes New Measures Against Epidemic

April 6, 2005

Henan, one of the Chinese provinces most affected by AIDS, is enacting new measures aimed at promoting HIV research, improving patient monitoring via a database, and undertaking clinical studies and evaluation of traditional herbal AIDS treatments, according to an official of the provincial health department. Last year, Henan spent 334 million yuan (US$40.2 million) caring for AIDS patients and their survivors in the province's 38 most-affected villages. "The money was also used to build basic infrastructure at the villages, like water supply systems, clinics, roads, schools and homes for the elderly," the official said.
