HHS States "Not a Sponsor" of Meth Conference

August 17, 2005

Rep. Mark Souder (R-Ind.) recently wrote to Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Leavitt asking why HHS was listed as a "primary sponsor" of the First National Conference on Methamphetamine, HIV and Hepatitis in Salt Lake City, which is being organized by the Harm Reduction Project.

On Tuesday, Suzy DeFrancis, HHS assistant secretary for public affairs, said the agency was "not a sponsor" of the conference and was listed as such incorrectly. Conference organizers are removing the department's name as a sponsor, she said.

Conference organizer Luciano Colonna said HHS gave $3,000 for travel scholarships, and any agency that contributed funds to the event was listed as a primary sponsor.

Conservatives see harm reduction as a step toward drug legalization. DeFrancis said HHS is responding to Souder's letter, but no details are available about the $3,000. HHS favors a balanced approach of drug prevention, treatment, and supply reduction, she said.
