International News Southern African Summit Opens With Calls for Action on Zimbabwe, AIDSAugust 18, 2005 On Wednesday in Botswana, Southern African leaders met for a two-day conference on economic development, good governance, and food security. Meanwhile, human rights groups are pressing for more democracy in Zimbabwe and Swaziland and more action on AIDS. In a declaration, the groups called on governments in the region to work more closely with civic groups to address such issues as poverty and human rights, and they called for targeted assistance to vulnerable populations like orphans and people with HIV/AIDS. In addition, they are seeking a legally binding protocol that would include gender equality targets, such as appointing women to 50 percent of decision-making positions by 2010.
