EU Contributes More Funds to Fight AIDS, TB, MalariaAugust 1, 2005 The European Commission, the EU's executive body, announced today that it is giving €58 million ($70 million US) to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. "HIV/AIDS is a major obstacle to development, notably in sub-Saharan Africa," said Louis Michel, commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid. "The European Commission is committed to playing its part and I am thus pleased to announce this additional contribution of 58 million euros for the Global Fund." Including today's sum, the EU has contributed €432.5 million ($527.9 million US) to the fund since 2002, and planned to spend more than €1.1 billion ($1.3 billion US) to fight the diseases from 2003 to 2006.
