Myanmar Vows to Continue AIDS Projects Despite Fund's Withdrawal

August 29, 2005

On Sunday, Myanmar vowed to continue fighting HIV/AIDS despite the withdrawal of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. The fund announced its pullout on Aug. 19, saying the ruling junta had created "an impossibly difficult environment to work in." At least 330,000 of Myanmar's 50 million people have HIV/AIDS, and the epidemic has fueled a concurrent rise in TB, with 97,000 new cases reported annually. During a rare press conference, Information Minister Kyaw Hsan said many European Union countries disagree with the Global Fund's decision and plan to give money on their own. He did not name the countries.
