WHO Appoints New Regional Director for Africa
January 19, 2005 On Friday, the World Health Organization announced it had appointed Angolan physician Luis Gomes Sambo as its new regional director for Africa. Sambo, who spent the last five years directing WHO's cooperation programs in Africa, will take the post Feb. 1. He said tackling Africa's HIV/AIDS pandemic would be his first priority in the job. "Without any doubt, HIV/AIDS infection is the public health problem that causes greatest concern on account of its impact on morbidity and mortality and on the economic performance of the member states of the region," said Sambo. He succeeds Ebrahim Malick Samba of Gambia, who has held the position since 1994.
