New Law in Taiwan Requires Hotels, Saunas to Provide Condoms

January 19, 2005

On Friday, the Taiwanese Parliament sought to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS by passing a law requiring hotels and saunas to stock condoms. Under the revision of an AIDS prevention law, the businesses must either give away or sell condoms. "They can place condoms in rooms, on the service counters or through dispensing machines. It is up to hotel and sauna operators to decide whether or not they will charge for the condoms," said Department of Health Director Chen Chien-jen. Violators of the law would face a maximum fine of 150,000 Taiwan dollars (US$4,700), said Chen.
