South Africa: Treatment Action Campaign Joins Up With Levi's to Fight HIV

January 19, 2005

Jeans company Levi Strauss SA is partnering with the AIDS lobby group Treatment Action Campaign in a new outreach to prevent HIV infections among young South Africans. This marks the first time TAC has attached its name to a corporate HIV/AIDS campaign. TAC Chairperson Zackie Achmat said the group decided to do so because of Levi Strauss' progressive attitude toward people living with the disease. The Red for Life campaign will kick off with a concert in Cape Town on Feb. 12 with a "condoms everywhere" message for youth. The campaign plans to distribute 60,000 condoms primarily to schools, and hopes to raise 1 million rand (US$165,000) for TAC to provide treatment to HIV-positive people.
