International News Belarus to Implement Global AIDS Fund Project Against AIDS SpreadJanuary 20, 2005 Belarus has begun to implement AIDS programs under a $17 million, five-year project supported by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. The national programs aim to fight the epidemic among youths and prison inmates. The diagnostic capabilities of hospitals will be improved; medical workers will be trained on the timely treatment of HIV-infected patients; and surveillance will be improved in order to track the epidemic and assess prevention measures. Experts believe the project will help reduce the price of AIDS medicines from their 2004 price of $5,600 a year per patient to $500-$600 per patient annually. More than 6,000 HIV-infected people are registered in Belarus, according to official figures.
