United Kingdom: HIV Is on the Rise in Ulster

January 21, 2005

The latest Department of Health figures for Northern Ireland show an increase in new HIV infections. From January to September 2004, the DOH recorded 31 new HIV cases -- the same number as for the entire year for 2003. And new HIV cases for the first six months of 2003 were double for the same period in 2002. About 450 people are estimated to have HIV in the province and, to date, 142 people have died in Northern Ireland from AIDS. Figures for the final quarter of 2004 have not been released yet.
