HIV Infections Up 3% Globally in 2003; Sharpest Rise in East Asia, UNAIDS, WHO Say

UNAIDS and the World Health Organization have released data on the growth of HIV infections. From 2003 to 2004, infections rose 3 percent globally. In various regions of the world during the same period, HIV among persons ages 0-49 grew by the percentages shown. East Asia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea: 22 percent. Eastern Europe and Central Asia: 17 percent. North Africa and the Middle East: 13 percent. Latin America: 6 percent. South Asia and Southeast Asia: 4 percent. Sub-Saharan Africa: 2 percent. Caribbean: 2 percent. Europe (excluding Eastern Europe), North America, Australia and New Zealand: 0 percent.
