Wisconsin: Black Teens Face Higher STD Rate, Studies Find

July 19, 2005

According to CDC data released last week at the 16th biennial meeting of the International Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Research in Amsterdam, 11.1 percent of blacks ages 15-19 tested positive for chlamydia in a survey of publicly funded prenatal clinics in 18 states, compared with 3.9 percent of similarly aged white patients, and 3.8 percent of Hispanic patients. In 2003, Milwaukee had the ninth-highest rate of chlamydia and ranked 13th for gonorrhea in the nation, CDC said. In 2002, the city had the sixth-highest chlamydia rate. Milwaukee Health Department statistics showed there were 9,167 chlamydia cases in 2004, up from 8,343 in 2003. For gonorrhea, there were 3,178 cases reported in the city last year, down from to 3,759 cases in 2003 and 4,499 gonorrhea cases in 2002.
