District of Columbia: Mayor Williams Proposes Whitman-Walker Aid
July 6, 2005 The D.C. Council may vote today on a proposal, offered by Mayor Anthony D. Williams, to allocate more than $2.1 million to the Whitman-Walker Clinic. In the wake of a May cash-flow crisis that saw the agency unable to make its payroll, its board has recommended broad service reductions. The proposed money would come as grants from two administrations within the city's Health Department; included is $100,000 for an adviser who would review the clinic's finances, recommend changes, and monitor the bottom line for at least one year. Under the mayor's plan, Whitman-Walker would commit to more direct fundraising and a review of its long-term stability.
