The Cambodia Daily reported that Cambodia's defense ministry has launched the "Model Man Campaign" to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS by discouraging drinking by soldiers, which can lead to unprotected sex with prostitutes. The program uses sports, quizzes and plays designed to teach soldiers not to abuse alcohol. It is sponsored by the ministry and the nonprofit Family Health International (FHI). A recent study by FHI found that 75 percent of 135 soldiers interviewed had sex with prostitutes after a night of drinking, and condoms were seldom used. Some 1.9 percent of Cambodians ages 15-49 have HIV, one of the highest rates in Southeast Asia.
