U.S. News Inmate Health Care Costs Could Increase by 60 PercentJune 2, 2005 Maryland officials say new, expensive treatments for AIDS and hepatitis C and the need for additional staff could drive up the cost of providing medical care for the state's 27,000 prisoners by 60 percent, to $110 million, from last year's $68 million. Hepatitis C has reached epidemic levels in many prison systems, and Maryland must adopt federal treatment protocols for treating the disease.
