At Least 30,000 Rwandan Children Need Antiretroviral Drugs
May 27, 2005 Today in Kigali, Annita Asimwe of the National Treatment and Research AIDS Center said at least 30,000 HIV-infected Rwandan children are in urgent need of antiretroviral (ARV) treatment. Asimwe said funds for care have focused on adults, while the plight of children has been overlooked. Just 500 of the 30,000 children in need of ARVs have access to them, resulting in the deaths of a large number of children, Asimwe noted. UNICEF and the Rwandan government are organizing a June conference that will address AIDS treatment, nutrition and the economic status of children in Rwanda.
