November 11, 2005

On Saturday, several prominent Indian actresses, Celina Jaitely and Yana Gupta, and singers, Shaan and Kunal Ganjawala, will perform at an AIDS awareness concert in Bombay. MTV, the event's sponsor, said the concert aims to promote responsibility among young people and educate them about steps they can take to avoid contracting HIV. Its theme, "Stand Up, Speak Up," stresses the empowerment of women. India's HIV-positive population, 5.13 million people, is second in size only to South Africa's.
