Ethiopia to Provide Free Antiretroviral Drugs to AIDS Patients
October 5, 2005 Ethiopia's Ministry of Health said today that selected government hospitals and rural health care centers have been given clearance to provide free antiretrovirals to AIDS patients regardless of income. Previously, most of the more than 1.5 million Ethiopians living with AIDS had to purchase ARVs. Some 9,000 patients had been receiving them for free in approximately 60 government health centers. In a program supported by UNAIDS, the government has now withdrawn requirements for AIDS patients to be certified as unable to pay in order to receive free treatment. About 100 health centers, including 40 recently authorized, will distribute the drugs.
