Australia: Games Athletes Plan for Bedroom GymnasticsOctober 7, 2005 On Thursday, condom maker Ansell said it will provide 60,000 condoms and 60,000 units of lubricant for the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, March 15-26. Burton Van Rooyen, Ansell's Asia-Pacific marketing vice president, said the company learned from the Sydney Olympics to stock additional supplies. "We initially supplied 50,000 condoms for the athletes' village in Sydney in 2000, however 30,000 additional condoms were requested during games time," said Van Rooyen. Details of how the condoms will be distributed to athletes have yet to be finalized with game officials. Van Rooyen said it is unlikely they would be handed out in welcome packs; rather, they will probably be stocked at a village clinic. "There are sometimes cultural sensitivities around condoms and contraception," he noted. Ansell is the official condom supplier for the event, which will welcome 4,500 competitors and 1,500 officials.
