Researchers in the study sought to examine Viagra use among men who have sex with men (MSM) and its relationship to risk behavior for HIV and STDs. They conducted a population-based telephone survey of MSM in San Francisco and collected information on demographics, sexual behavior, substance use, HIV, and health status. Recent Viagra use, which was reported by 29 percent of the sample, was associated with HIV serostatus, larger numbers of male sex partners, higher levels of unprotected anal sex, and higher levels of illicit recreational drug use. Use of Viagra was not associated with age, race or socioeconomic status. The researchers concluded, "Viagra use appears to have become a stable fixture of the sexual culture of MSM, crossing age, race, and socioeconomic subgroups. Its use is associated with a general behavioral risk pattern for HIV/STD transmission." Sexually Transmitted Diseases 09.05; Vol. 32; No. 9: P. 531-533; Jay P.
