Aspen Pharmacare, Matrix to Set Up Venture

September 27, 2005

Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd., South Africa's largest drug maker, and India's Matrix Laboratories Ltd. on Friday announced the establishment of a joint venture, called Astrix Laboratories Ltd., to manufacture generic AIDS drugs and other medications. Aspen will invest $36.5 million, and Matrix will transfer its manufacturing plant in Hyderabad, India, to Astrix. That factory currently makes antiretrovirals for the treatment of HIV/AIDS. In the transfer, expected to be completed by Jan. 1, Matrix will pass on the technology and intellectual property rights to some drugs made at the Hyderabad plant. Aspen and Matrix are among companies under contract to the William J. Clinton Foundation to supply low-cost AIDS drugs for the foundation's work in Africa.
