California: School District OKs Abstinence Curriculum
September 29, 2005 Late Tuesday, the board of the Santa Ana Unified School District voted 4-1 to approve an abstinence-based sex education curriculum on the condition that a new abstinence textbook is supplemented with information that covers birth-control alternatives. Sex education has long been a controversial issue in Santa Ana, where the teen birth rate is twice the national average. At the meeting, scores of parents, teachers, activists and community members filled the board's chambers in support of the action.
