European Union Helping Libyan AIDS Sufferers

September 7, 2005

On Tuesday, the European Commission announced it was providing Libya with advice and technical assistance to help treat people with HIV/AIDS. EU and Libyan experts were set to meet Tuesday to discuss the support, which includes upgrading the Benghazi Center for Infectious Diseases and Immunology to meet international standards. "If all parties play their part in this joint effort the action plan should quickly result in a substantial improvement for the HIV/AIDS sufferers and their families," said Benita Ferrero-Waldner, EU external relations commissioner. She said the assistance was unrelated to securing the release of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor, who were condemned to death in May 2004 after being convicted for deliberately infecting more than 380 children with HIV. The European Union has been lobbying to have the six released.
