Spain's AIDS Rate Remains One of Europe's Highest

April 10, 2006

Though new AIDS cases in Spain dropped 11.5 percent in 2005 compared to 2004, the country continues to have one of Europe's highest infection rates. Approximately 48 percent of those newly diagnosed with AIDS contracted HIV through IV drug use, while another 46 percent of cases were transmitted sexually. Among those who were infected via sexual transmission, around 55 percent learned they had HIV at the same time they were diagnosed with AIDS. About 77 percent of those newly diagnosed with AIDS were men, with the average age being 40. Of those infected through sex, 31 percent were heterosexuals and 15 percent were homosexuals. More than 52 percent of the newly diagnosed heterosexuals were women.
