International News Russia's Rostropovich to Become UN AIDS RepresentativeApril 28, 2006 Russian cello virtuoso Mstislav Rostropovich has signed on to become a special UNAIDS representative, the organization said today. "Every day, children die because they do not have access to prevention, treatment, care, and support that could have saved their lives," said Rostropovich, who since 1991 has been active on behalf of children's health issues in former Soviet bloc countries. "This is not only a health issue, it is an issue of fundamental equity and human rights. I will help save children's lives by making the world leaders and international communities commit responsibly to meet the AIDS response," he said.
