International News South Africa: AIDS Group Barred From UN MeetingApril 4, 2006 On Monday, the Treatment Action Campaign said South Africa's Health Ministry has barred it from attending a major UN forum on the epidemic. The UN General Assembly Special Session on AIDS is scheduled for May 31-June 2 in New York City. Health Ministry officials have conceded TAC has been removed from the official list of invited organizations. TAC's push for the distribution of antiretrovirals in South Africa has put it at odds with President Thabo Mbeki, who has raised doubts about the drugs' effectiveness. TAC's work was recognized with a Nobel Prize nomination in 2004. Washington Times 04.04.06 This article was provided by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
