International News India Delivers Safe Sex Message With Morning PapersAugust 18, 2006 On Tuesday in Andhra Pradesh, newspapers delivered to thousands of people in 50 villages and four towns including something extra: a pack of three condoms taped to the front page. "Earlier we distributed condoms at wine shops and bars, through milk vendors and at [tobacco] shops, but we met with lukewarm response," said Ashok Kumar, the director of Andhra Pradesh State for AIDS Control Society, which carried out the project. Especially in rural areas of India, conservative attitudes about sex and contraception, stigma and a lack of awareness present particular challenges to the effort to stop the spread of HIV.
