Zimbabwean AIDS Council Urged to Offer More to Farm Workers

August 2, 2006

On Sunday, Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union President Wilson Nyabonda said the National AIDS Council is doing very little to help HIV-positive farmers access antiretrovirals. Farm workers must be given more assistance, he said, as they are the heart of the nation's agriculture industry. Gertrude Hambira, secretary-general of the General Agricultural and Plantation Workers Union of Zimbabwe, echoed his complaint. HIV/AIDS claims the lives of some 3,000 Zimbabweans every week and through last year had orphaned more than 950,000 children there.
