China: HIV Spreads to All of Beijing's 18 Districts, Counties

August 3, 2006

In the past six months, more than 300 new HIV/AIDS cases have been reported in Beijing. Cases have now been documented in every one of the capital's 18 districts and counties, said Guan Baoying, an official with the municipal health bureau. With the addition of the new cases, 3,142 Beijing residents are now known to be living with HIV/AIDS. According to Guan, the chief transmission routes were drug use (36.7 percent of cases) and sexual contact (34 percent). Toward the goal of stopping the spread of HIV through drug use, Beijing plans to open six methadone clinics this year.
