SIECUS is a 35-year-old nonprofit organization, dedicated to affirming that sexuality is a natural and healthy part of life. SIECUS develops, collects, and disseminates information, promotes comprehensive education, and advocates the right of individuals to make responsible sexual choices.
Three Decades of Leadership
In 1964, a lawyer, a sociologist, a clergyman, a family life educator, a public health educator, and a physician came together to form the Sex Information and Education Council of the United States. Their mission then remains our mission today: to assure that all people -- including adolescents, the disabled, sexual minorities, and the elderly -- have the right to affirm that sexuality is a natural and healthy part of their lives.
During these three decades, SIECUS has been in the forefront of promoting sexuality education for people of all ages and protecting the right of individuals to make responsible sexual choices. SIECUS has helped hundreds of thousands of parents provide sexuality education to their children; professionals who have sought advice and guidance; communities in the process of implementing sexuality education in their school; and people of every age and background with a desperate need for clear and objective answers to their questions about sexual issues.
Three Decades of Program Innovation
SIECUS has been a leader in developing innovative sexuality information and education programs. Groundbreaking projects have been launched to help communities fight attacks on sexuality education; to provide education to the physically and developmentally disabled; to assist parents in providing sexuality education to their children; and to develop culturally specific and sensitive education materials.
SIECUS has continued its efforts to improve the delivery of sexuality education to diverse populations. SIECUS has initiated a special AIDS education project. SIECUS publishes the Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education: K-12th Grade. SIECUS is working internationally to adapt the guidelines for use in other countries.
Three Decades of Activism
Since its beginning, SIECUS has been a pioneer in taking stands on current sexuality issues of public concern. Committed to promoting sexual and reproductive rights as well as fighting sexual ignorance, censorship, sexism, and discrimination based on gender, age, or sexual orientation, SIECUS staff advocate for sexual health and education through public speaking, workshops, seminars, and publication. Through court cases, public testimony, and public education, SIECUS has continued to work on protecting the sexual rights of all Americans.
Three Decades of Information
SIECUS' Mary S. Calderone Library is the most comprehensive library of its kind in the world. It provides information on all aspects of human sexuality, including AIDS, and offers a wealth of resource material otherwise unavailable to the general public.
SIECUS has been a leader in publishing materials about sexuality for professionals and the general public. SIECUS publishes and distributes thousands of new and revised pamphlets, booklets, and bibliographies each year.
Three Decades of Support
Throughout our history, SIECUS has always relied on the support of those who share our belief that everyone has the right to accurate, comprehensive information and education about all aspects of sexuality. Our members and donors are part of a growing network of more than 3,500 professionals and concerned individuals and organizations, who are dedicated to promoting the delivery of sexuality education and information and protecting individual sexual rights.
