India, United Kingdom: Bollywood Stars in BBC AIDS Show

February 10, 2006

India's National AIDS Control Organization and its state-run Doordarshan TV are partnering with BBC World Service Trust to produce the reality show Haath Se Haath Milaa (Let's Join Hands). In each episode, a star from India's film industry will join a young person whose work involves raising AIDS awareness. "I have participated to show my solidarity to people living with HIV/AIDS. I will do anything for them to feel wanted and special," actor Shilpa Shetty said at an event in Delhi marking the show's premiere. "The Bollywood factor is there to entertain -- to get us eyeballs, but also to be inspirational and aspirational for viewers," said Anu Malhotra, creative director for the project, which is funded by the British Department for International Development.
