U.S. News Elizabeth Taylor Treats New Orleans to a Birthday GiftFebruary 24, 2006 Elizabeth Taylor will commemorate her 74th birthday Monday by donating a mobile medical unit for metro New Orleans HIV/AIDS patients, her publicist, Danny Guttman, said Thursday. The unit is "like a large recreational vehicle, about 40 feet long, with two examination rooms and x-ray facilities," said Martin Delaney, founding director of Project Inform, a national AIDS organization that assisted with Taylor's gift. The mobile unit is already being used in New Orleans for educational purposes, Delaney said. An official launch of the van, which will be staffed by doctors from clinics closed by Hurricane Katrina, is planned for late March. "There are a lot of areas in the Gulf Coast that have never been served well by AIDS clinics," said Delaney. "This provides a chance to bring treatment out to a much wider range of places." Taylor helped establish the American Foundation for AIDS Research in 1985 and the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation in 1991.
