Bono Praises Brazil Anti-AIDS Campaign

February 24, 2006

In Salvador, Brazil, on Wednesday, U2 rock star Bono received a kit containing a packet of condoms and HIV prevention information. Bono praised the Brazilian government's AIDS campaign, which distributes the packets, the Health Ministry said. "Bono said he is involved in things like this [AIDS campaigns] and has sought to learn more about the question of AIDS in Brazil," said Culture Minister and pop star Gilberto Gil, who was at the dinner where Bono received the kit. Brazil provides free AIDS drugs to about 160,000 patients. Bono will be a guest of Gil at Carnival, during which Brazil's Health Ministry will distribute 25 million condoms. The celebration runs from Friday night to Ash Wednesday, March 1.
