Prevention/Epidemiology Illinois: Northwestern University Proposes Placing Condoms in Dorm Vending MachinesJanuary 26, 2006 Vending machines in dorms at Northwestern University may soon offer condoms for sale. Condoms should be in existing machines in Bobb Hall and Allison Hall by the end of the quarter; sales from these dorms will be studied to determine if demand is sufficient to expand sales to other dorms, according to Jessica Joslin, a senior at the School of Education and Social Policy and the co-chairperson of the committee planning the condom sales. The committee includes faculty and staff and about six students appointed through Associated Student Government. Health Services Director Dr. Donald Misch said the university now buys about 15,000 condoms a year for free distribution at Searle Student Health Service. But that facility closes daily at 5:30 p.m. and is not open on Sunday. Leah Witt, co-chairperson of the committee, said some students may be too embarrassed to request condoms from the health staff. Previously, Community Assistants were given condoms to distribute to students, but that program was ended because some CAs were uncomfortable giving them out, and because CAs were not always available to do so. Misch said, "We don't want to put up barriers for people taking care of themselves."
