Clinton Urges Africa to Step Up AIDS TestsJuly 17, 2006 On Friday in Malawi, former President Bill Clinton called on African governments to encourage people to undergo voluntary HIV testing. "People living with HIV and AIDS can live a normal life if they go for testing to know their status. We'll bring the medicine, and it does not matter at what cost, but how many lives will be saved and changed," Clinton said. Clinton was in Malawi to spotlight new projects undertaken by the Clinton-Hunter Foundation Development Initiative, which seeks to address poverty and the AIDS epidemic. The former president's partner in the initiative is Tom Hunter, a Scottish philanthropist and retail magnate who is putting up $100 million. The initiative has allocated $100 million for Rwanda and Malawi; initial efforts will focus on health, infrastructure, agriculture and entrepreneurial support.
