South Africa: Correctional Services to Appeal ARV Order
July 25, 2006
The Durban High Court has granted the South African Correctional Services department permission to appeal an order to expedite the provision of antiretrovirals for Westville Prison inmates. However, Judge Thumba Pillay found the department would have no difficulty in obeying the court's earlier ruling during the appeal, and he ordered it carried out. While the department risked no harm, the judge said, for prisoners the issue is one of life or death. Evidence presented in the case said at least 110 inmates died of AIDS-related illnesses at Westville last year.
