Europe Approves New Formulation of Abbott HIV Drug

July 5, 2006

On Monday, Abbott Laboratories announced the European Commission has granted approval to a new formulation of its HIV drug Kaletra requiring fewer doses and no refrigeration. U.S. regulators approved the innovation in October; the EC's approval was expected, given a positive evaluation by a panel of European Union experts in April. Adults on the new formulation will need to take four pills daily, with or without food, instead of the current six. In addition, Abbott said the EC's decision will help it seek approval in developing nations where refrigeration is scarce.
