U.S. News CDC Panel Mulls Cancer Vaccine UseJune 27, 2006 On Thursday, CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is expected to recommend who should receive a recently approved cervical cancer vaccine and by what age the vaccine should be administered. Merck & Co.'s Gardasil was found to be safe and effective in protecting against two strains of the STD human papillomavirus (HPV) that are responsible for about 70 percent of cervical cancers. To be most effective, Gardasil should be given before women start having sexual intercourse, through which HPV is transmitted. Ultimately, individual states will decide who receives Gardasil and when, though they look to the CDC panel for guidance.
