Liz Taylor Sponsors AIDS Treatment in South Africa

June 2, 2006

Actress Elizabeth Taylor donated $30,000 to help a South African clinic provide more antiretroviral drugs to local HIV/AIDS patients, Michael Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), said Thursday. AHF's Ithembalabantu Clinic in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal Province, previously received $25,000 from Taylor in 2004. Weinstein said the clinic, which was established in 2001, is "an inspiring example to show that the provision of comprehensive treatment and care for HIV/AIDS patients in a resource-constrained setting is feasible and extremely effective." The clinic currently cares for more than 4,500 people, more than 1,500 of whom receive ARVs through the facility.
