International News Brazil to Provide Free Antiretroviral Drugs to CaribbeanMarch 14, 2006 Edward Greene, an assistant secretary-general of the 15-member Caribbean Community, announced Saturday that Brazil will provide free antiretrovirals to 550 HIV/AIDS patients in the Eastern Caribbean. The program, which begins next month, will run for five years and assist people in nine countries, Greene said, adding that about 500,000 people in the Caribbean are HIV-infected. Later this year, Cuba plans to launch a program to educate caregivers and reduce HIV/AIDS stigma. The Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV/AIDS has received $5 million from the United States in the past two years and is due to receive $7 million more in U.S. contributions later this year.
